In the former administrative blocks, concrete trusses have had aluminium plates bolted to either side of them as have the columns.
Aluminium foam features heavily at the Fondazione, both inside and out, its appearance on gallery walls an act of resistance on the architects’ part to the generic white cube – and recalls the special foams that OMA developed for Prada’s retail spaces. The new home of Fondazione Prada in Milan, inaugurated in 2015 after the renovation of seven structures of the old distillery – warehouses, laboratories, and brewing silos; and the construction of two new ones – a glazed exhibition hall and a mirror-clad cinema –, has been completed with a last and iconic volume: a white concrete tower .Every inch of an unremarkable four-storey building, known as the Haunted House, is clad in 24 carat gold leaf (including the drainpipes and roof railing). The new low-slung ‘cinema’ building, meanwhile, comes coated in reflective polished aluminium.Commissioned by Fondazione Prada, the project embraces a coexistence of new architecture with the regeneration of an early 20th-century gin distillery that includes warehouses, laboratories and brewing silos, as well as new buildings surrounding a large courtyard.
